Handling Seminar May 21-22 2016

Posted on by

Please join us for a handling seminar in Des Moines on May 21-22, 2016. 8AM-4PM both days

We are delighted to be able to offer this exciting seminar by Norma Smith!

Saturday will be covering aspects of showing for both beginners and experts.  Demonstrations and discussion will include the way to stack your dog, discussion about the best pacing, what to do when your dog posts, and the best speed for your dog and why.  Ring procedures will be discussed.  We will be working one on one with you and your dog’s issues.  And, most importantly, any questions you can think of will be addressed.

Sunday will be a continuation of more one on one help, questions and answers.  In the afternoon, there will be a mock dog show, but it won’t be your dog that is being judged – think of this as the best junior handling class for adults!  Participants without a dog will be able to observe and ask questions while the show is occurring.  Awards will be given for the best in seminar, most improved, most professionally dressed, etc.  Bring your show clothes and prepare for some competition with your new found knowledge!

Seminar Details:

Advanced:  This class is for handlers who have handled for two more years OR who have handled at least one dog to their championship.  Cost is $150 with dog.

Beginner:  This class is for the novice exhibitor.  Cost is $150 with dog.

Observer:  This is extremely beneficial for those who want to attend and have a great opportunity to listen and learn without the distraction of a dog.  Cost is $75.

Special price for Junior Handlers: $75 with a dog; free as a spectator.

-Dogs not being worked must be crated.  Dogs must be crate trained and well behaved as they will be crated away from the working area of the seminar.  Disruptive dogs will be asked to be removed from the building.

-Bring appropriate dog supplies, your own chairs and floor covering for your dog.

Included will be morning refreshments, snacks and lunch both days.  We will be indoors, in fully matted rings, at the Des Moines Obedience Training Club (1423 Army Post Rd, Des Moines, IA 50315).

Judging Program for Jan 23-34 2016 show

Posted on by

Our judging program is now available online: http://www.onofrio.com/jp/CEIA1JP.pdf.

Check out the pages that have the “Judging Program by Alphabetical Order”. It lists each breed and the ring/time in which they show each day.  Each day is a separate show.

The break down by ring is down a little further in the program.  It shows the schedule for each individual ring.

The ring break down might look like this:
Ring 1
8:30
15 Doberman Pinschers 6-5-2-2
12 Newfoundlands 1-5-5-1

Neither breed can start before the posted ring time, however if all of the Dobermans are absent, the Newfoundlands would start right at 8:30.  If all the Dobermans are there, it will be about 9AM before the Newfies actually start showing.

What do all those numbers mean? The number in front of the breed reflects the total entry.  The four numbers after are the breakdown of gender and what is called “class” entries vs “specials”.  In the case of the Dobermans above, there are 6 “class” dogs, 5 class bitches, 2 dog specials and two bitch specials.  Males are called dogs and females are called bitches.  Dogs are always listed (and shown) first.

A class entry would be competing for points towards his/her AKC championship.  A special is an entry that has already finished their championship, but are competing for points towards their grand championship and for breed rankings.

For more information about what goes on inside the ring, check out our Dog Show FAQ.  We also have a page about Spectator Etiquette.
